What is Boswellia and Why is it so Awesome?

Benefits of Boswellia

If you live outside of the India you have probably never heard of Boswellia, but you may be much more familiar with its common name, Indian Frankincense. This fragrant resign is actually the sap-like extract from the Boswellia Serrata tree and is a common medicinal plant in traditional medicines like Ayurveda. Its even mentioned in the Bible as one of the three gifts brought to Jesus!  But what is it that makes this fragrant resin so incredible? Studies have shown that Boswellia has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties that can slow down the aging process, help with autoimmune diseases, and even prevent and fight cancer!

 Boswellia Benefits

To start let’s take a look at what benefits of Boswellia have received the most scientific attention. This includes:

  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Asthma
  • Possibly certain types of cancer like breast, brain, pancreatic as well as leukemia

Inflammation-Related Conditions

Like many other medicinal plants, the main benefits that Boswellia provides is its incredible ability to control inflammation in the human body. This leads to it being of significant use in combating a wide variety of common diseases. This includes arthritis and joint pain, as well as a gauntlet of other autoimmune diseases such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease.

The main active ingredients in Boswellia that helps fight inflammation are Boswellic acids, more specifically acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA). Boswellia also contains plentiful amounts of terpenes which are the strong-smelling compounds that give basil, citrus fruit, and peppermint their pleasing aromas. These compounds work to suppress T-lymphocytes as well as the production of leukotrienes which are both major causes of chronic inflammation in humans.

Finally, Boswellia contains a fascinating active compound called incensole acetate. This little compound has a similar effect on lowering inflammation like the previously mentioned compounds, but it has the added benefit of helping particularly with inflammation located in the brain. In fact, it has been shown in studies to act as a guardian to neurons and helps protect them from inflammation and tumors. There is even evidence that it can have mood enhancing effects which may be useful in helping people with anxiety and depression!

Boswellia and Cancer

While Boswellia is no cure for cancer or a replacement for medical treatment, it can help prevent cancer and may be of benefit to people fighting certain types of cancer. In fact, studies have shown that boswellic acids may be able to help fight breast cancer cells, malignant leukemia, pancreatic cancer cells, and even brain tumor cells!

If these miraculous abilities were not enough Boswellia may be even more effective at preventing cancer than it is at fighting it. The terpenes in Boswellia are very powerful antioxidants as are the Boswellic acids.

Boswellia is a Great Team Player

If you are impressed with what Boswellia can do alone, you will be blown away by what it can do with its superpowered friend, Turmeric. These two plants both have similar effects on the body and have both been staples in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. It should come as no surprise then that when Turmeric and Boswellia are taken together their benefits are greater than the sum of either of them alone!

When used together these two amazing plants can fight the diseases mentioned above even more effectively and help boost the benefits of each other. There is even evidence that shows the phytochemicals of each of these medicinals can help prevent toxicity which can happen from taking too much of one alone.

There is no doubt that Boswellia is a rising star in the world of herbal medicine, and for good reason! It has a history of use going back centuries, and an increasing amount of hard scientific evidence showing that its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties are very real. Here at A Wholesome Remedy, we are always searching for ingredients that have proven benefits in helping you increase your overall health. We are proud to include the amazing plant known as Boswellia in our Rejuvenating Turmeric Supplement.
